Pitch Lowering Surgery

What is Thyroplasty?

For individuals whose vocal pitch remains too high despite therapy, pitch lowering surgery offers an effective solution. At the New York Voice Center, Dr. Pincus—trained by the originator of this technique, Dr. Ishiiki—performs Thyroplasty, also known as pitch lowering surgery.

How It Works

Thyroplasty is an outpatient procedure that lowers vocal pitch by removing a small strip of cartilage from the larynx. This allows the vocal cords to relax, producing a deeper voice. The surgery is safe, effective, and tailored to help patients achieve a vocal tone that better matches their identity and communication needs.

Why Consider Pitch Lowering Surgery?

During puberty, the voice box typically matures, causing the vocal cords to loosen and pitch to lower. If this change doesn’t occur fully, an individual may retain a higher voice than desired, which can affect confidence and social or professional interactions. Surgery may be appropriate when voice therapy alone is not enough.
